18TH CENTURY ALTERATIONS DESTROY 13TH CENTURY WINDOWS:
Perceptions of beauty change through the ages. The destruction of priceless stained glass windows by 18th century architects making renovations to the cathedral, is an example of this.
In 1772, a new high altar was commissioned for the cathedral and in order to let more light fall on it, the architects simply knocked 12 of the 13th-century windows out of the [G 08 / choir] and [G 30 / transept.] The new altar, was decorated in the flamboyant style typical of the 18th century and bore no aesthetic resemblance to the rest of the Gothic cathedral.
